Course Introduction

The Social Development Strategies for Informal Economy Inclusion course is designed to strengthen the capacity of development practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders to design and implement inclusive strategies that integrate informal workers into sustainable economic systems. It addresses structural exclusion and promotes equitable development.

The course explores the dynamics of the informal economy, which includes street vendors, small-scale traders, domestic workers, artisans, and gig workers. Participants will gain insights into the socio-economic contributions of informal workers and the challenges they face, including lack of protection, insecurity, and limited access to services.

A key focus is placed on developing inclusive policies and programs that recognize, support, and formalize informal economic activities without undermining livelihoods. The course highlights strategies for improving working conditions, access to finance, and social protection for informal workers.

Participants will also examine how urbanization, migration, and economic transitions shape informal economies in different contexts. The training emphasizes the need for adaptive, context-specific strategies that respond to evolving economic realities.

The course integrates participatory planning tools and stakeholder engagement approaches to ensure that informal workers are actively involved in policy and program design. It promotes inclusive dialogue between governments, private sector actors, and informal worker associations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement strategies that enhance inclusion, productivity, and resilience within the informal economy while contributing to broader social and economic development goals.
