Course Introduction

Post-conflict and fragile states face unique and complex challenges in rebuilding societies, restoring governance, and promoting sustainable peace. Social development in such contexts requires specialized approaches that address humanitarian needs while laying the foundation for long-term stability and inclusive growth.

This course equips participants with knowledge and skills to understand the dynamics of fragility, post-conflict recovery, and the role of social development in strengthening resilience. It integrates global frameworks, local realities, and evidence-based strategies for rebuilding institutions, restoring trust, and empowering communities.

Participants will explore strategies for conflict-sensitive programming, inclusive governance, and equitable service delivery in fragile settings. The course highlights the importance of addressing root causes of conflict, including inequality, exclusion, and weak institutions, while promoting reconciliation and social cohesion.

A special focus is placed on the intersection between humanitarian response, peacebuilding, and development (the triple nexus). Learners will engage with case studies from post-conflict regions worldwide, examining both successes and failures to draw practical lessons.

The training also emphasizes the role of participatory governance, gender inclusion, and youth empowerment in peacebuilding and recovery processes. By linking theory with practice, participants will gain tools to design and implement programs that support stability and sustainable development.

Ultimately, this course empowers professionals to become agents of change in fragile contexts, helping to rebuild societies, strengthen institutions, and foster pathways to resilience and peace.
