Introduction

Climate change is increasingly affecting livelihoods, social systems, economic stability, food security, public health, and community resilience across the world. Vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, indigenous communities, rural households, and low-income urban populations, are disproportionately affected by climate-related shocks such as droughts, floods, displacement, food insecurity, environmental degradation, and loss of livelihoods. This course equips participants with practical knowledge and strategic approaches for integrating social development principles into climate adaptation and resilience-building initiatives.

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between climate change, social vulnerability, inequality, governance systems, and sustainable development. Participants will examine how social development interventions can strengthen adaptive capacity, reduce climate risks, enhance community resilience, and support inclusive recovery processes within vulnerable populations and fragile socio-economic environments. The programme emphasizes people-centered adaptation approaches that promote equity, sustainability, and long-term resilience.

Participants will explore practical frameworks for climate adaptation planning, social protection systems, livelihood resilience, gender-responsive programming, community engagement, and participatory governance approaches that strengthen social resilience. The course integrates multidisciplinary perspectives that combine environmental sustainability, disaster risk reduction, public policy, social inclusion, economic empowerment, and institutional capacity strengthening within climate adaptation programming.

Emerging issues such as climate migration, climate justice, loss and damage financing, green social protection systems, nature-based solutions, climate-sensitive urban development, AI-driven climate risk analytics, ESG frameworks, and locally led adaptation models are integrated throughout the programme. Participants will analyze how governments, NGOs, development agencies, and communities are responding to increasingly complex climate and social resilience challenges within changing environmental and economic contexts.

The programme adopts a practical and action-oriented learning approach that combines case studies, climate vulnerability assessments, resilience planning exercises, stakeholder mapping, policy analysis, and adaptive programme design methodologies. Participants will strengthen their ability to design and implement socially inclusive climate adaptation initiatives that improve resilience outcomes, reduce vulnerability, and strengthen institutional preparedness for climate-related shocks and stresses.

By the end of the course, participants will possess practical skills in climate adaptation planning, social resilience programming, community development, policy integration, and sustainable development approaches that support inclusive and climate-resilient societies. They will be better equipped to contribute toward resilient development planning, effective climate governance, and long-term social transformation initiatives within vulnerable communities and institutions.
