Course Introduction

Social development approaches to reducing multidimensional poverty focus on addressing the complex and interrelated deprivations that affect individuals and communities beyond income poverty. This course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding poverty as a multidimensional phenomenon that includes education, health, living standards, social inclusion, and access to opportunities.

The course explores the structural causes of multidimensional poverty, including inequality, unemployment, weak governance, discrimination, and lack of access to essential services. Participants will examine how these factors interact and reinforce cycles of deprivation, limiting human development and social mobility across generations.

A strong emphasis is placed on integrated social development strategies that combine economic empowerment, social protection, human capital development, and inclusive service delivery. Participants will learn how to design holistic interventions that address multiple dimensions of poverty simultaneously rather than focusing on single-sector solutions.

The program also highlights measurement frameworks such as the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and other data-driven tools used to assess poverty beyond income levels. Learners will gain practical skills in identifying, measuring, and analyzing deprivation patterns to inform evidence-based policy and program design.

Emerging issues such as urban poverty, digital exclusion, climate-related vulnerability, and gendered poverty dynamics are integrated into the curriculum. These challenges require adaptive and context-specific approaches that respond to evolving social and economic realities in both rural and urban settings.

Ultimately, this course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to design, implement, and evaluate effective poverty reduction strategies. Participants will be empowered to promote inclusive development, reduce inequalities, and improve overall human well-being in diverse communities.
