Course Introduction

The informal economy plays a central role in livelihoods across developing and emerging economies, yet it often operates outside formal regulation, protection, and support systems. This course provides a structured understanding of how social development approaches can be used to transform informal economic systems into more inclusive, productive, and sustainable frameworks.

The program explores the dynamics of informal employment, including street vending, casual labor, home-based work, and small-scale enterprises. Participants will examine the drivers of informality such as poverty, unemployment, weak regulation, and limited access to formal markets.

A strong emphasis is placed on policy and institutional reforms that support gradual formalization without disrupting livelihoods. Participants will learn how to design inclusive strategies that balance regulation with economic opportunity and social protection.

The course also highlights the importance of social protection systems, financial inclusion, skills development, and market access in supporting informal economy workers. These interventions are critical for improving productivity and income stability.

Participants will explore how urbanization, digital transformation, and globalization are reshaping informal economies. New opportunities and risks are emerging, requiring adaptive and forward-looking policy responses.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement social development strategies that support the transition of informal economies into more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economic systems.
