Course Introduction
Structural inequality remains one of the most persistent barriers to inclusive social and economic development across the world. This course provides a deep and analytical exploration of how systemic inequalities are formed, sustained, and reproduced within societies. Participants will gain the tools to critically examine social structures, power relations, and institutional arrangements that shape unequal access to resources, opportunities, and services.
Understanding inequality requires more than surface-level observation; it demands rigorous analysis of historical, political, economic, and cultural systems. This course introduces participants to advanced frameworks for diagnosing inequality at multiple levels, including household, community, institutional, and national structures. Through this lens, learners develop the capacity to identify root causes rather than symptoms of disparity.
The course emphasizes how structural inequalities manifest across sectors such as education, health, employment, governance, and social protection systems. Participants will examine how intersecting identities—including gender, class, ethnicity, disability, and geography—compound disadvantage and exclusion. This intersectional approach ensures a more comprehensive understanding of inequality dynamics.
Participants will also explore the role of policies, institutions, and governance systems in either reinforcing or reducing inequality. By analyzing real-world case studies, the course demonstrates how policy design choices can unintentionally perpetuate disparities or, conversely, promote equity and inclusion when carefully structured.
A strong focus is placed on data-driven inequality analysis. Participants will learn how to interpret social indicators, inequality indices, and qualitative evidence to assess the depth and breadth of disparities. This analytical grounding supports evidence-based decision-making and more targeted social development interventions.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to design informed strategies that address structural inequality through policy reform, programmatic interventions, and advocacy initiatives. They will be equipped to contribute meaningfully to building fairer, more inclusive, and socially just systems.
