Course Introduction

Social cohesion and peacebuilding are critical components of sustainable humanitarian and development interventions in fragile and conflict-affected settings. This course provides participants with a deep understanding of how humanitarian action can either strengthen or undermine social relations within communities.

The program explores the drivers of conflict, division, and fragility, including inequality, resource competition, identity politics, and historical grievances. Participants will learn how these factors influence humanitarian programming and community dynamics in crisis environments.

A strong emphasis is placed on designing interventions that promote trust, dialogue, reconciliation, and cooperation among affected populations. The course highlights how humanitarian actors can contribute to peacebuilding while delivering life-saving assistance.

Participants will also examine the risks of unintended harm, including how poorly designed interventions can exacerbate tensions or reinforce exclusion. Conflict-sensitive programming and “do no harm” principles are integrated throughout the learning process.

The course introduces practical tools for social cohesion analysis, stakeholder mapping, and community dialogue facilitation. These tools help practitioners design inclusive and conflict-sensitive humanitarian responses.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and implement humanitarian programs that strengthen social cohesion, reduce tensions, and contribute to sustainable peace in fragile contexts.
