Introduction

The Smart Roads, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and Emerging Technologies Course is designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of how cutting-edge technologies are being deployed to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in modern transport networks. Through a combination of theory, case studies, and practical applications, this course will equip professionals with the tools needed to design, implement, and manage next-generation transportation systems.

This course explores the fundamentals and frameworks of ITS, including traffic management systems, real-time data analytics, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, and smart sensors embedded in roads and transport facilities. Participants will gain insights into how these systems improve road safety, reduce congestion, and optimize traffic flow, while also supporting more informed urban planning and policy development. Emphasis will be placed on the technological ecosystem that supports ITS, such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing.

As emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles, 5G connectivity, and digital twins become increasingly integrated into the transport landscape, the course also covers the implications, opportunities, and challenges of these innovations. Learners will examine how these tools are reshaping transportation planning, logistics, and infrastructure development. The course provides a forward-looking perspective on how cities and nations are preparing for smart mobility futures and the crucial role of interdisciplinary collaboration in this transformation.

Targeting a diverse audience including transport planners, civil engineers, ICT professionals, policymakers, urban developers, and researchers this course bridges the gap between traditional transportation engineering and digital innovation. It provides a platform for critical thinking and dialogue on the socio-economic, regulatory, and environmental considerations in deploying smart transportation solutions. Participants will also explore real-world case studies from leading smart cities and transport corridors.

By the end of the course, participants will be empowered to contribute to the development and deployment of intelligent transportation systems that are resilient, inclusive, and adaptive to future demands. Whether you're involved in public infrastructure, private sector mobility solutions, or academic research, this course offers the knowledge and vision necessary to thrive in the evolving field of smart and connected transportation.
