Course Introduction

Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) are fundamental human rights that ensure individuals can make informed, free, and responsible decisions about their bodies, sexuality, and reproductive health. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of SRHR programming within development and humanitarian contexts, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate rights-based interventions that promote health equity and social justice.

Despite global progress, significant disparities persist in access to sexual and reproductive health services, particularly among women, adolescents, persons with disabilities, and marginalized populations. Barriers such as stigma, cultural norms, legal restrictions, and weak health systems continue to undermine SRHR outcomes. This course examines these challenges and provides practical strategies for addressing inequities through inclusive and rights-based programming approaches.

The course explores the intersection of SRHR with gender equality, public health, education, and human rights frameworks. Participants will analyze how social determinants such as poverty, education levels, and geographic location influence SRHR outcomes. It also highlights the importance of integrating SRHR into broader health systems strengthening and development programming to achieve sustainable impact.

Special attention is given to adolescent sexual and reproductive health, maternal health, family planning, prevention of gender-based violence, and HIV/AIDS programming. The course provides participants with tools to design evidence-based interventions that respond to the diverse needs of populations while respecting cultural contexts and human rights standards.

Emerging global issues such as digital health, climate change impacts on health systems, migration, and humanitarian crises are also explored in relation to SRHR programming. Participants will learn how to adapt SRHR interventions to complex and evolving global challenges while ensuring accessibility, equity, and dignity for all individuals.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and evaluate SRHR programs that are rights-based, inclusive, and evidence-driven. They will be equipped to strengthen health systems, influence policy, and promote equitable access to sexual and reproductive health services across diverse settings.
