Course Introduction

Seed systems form the foundation of agricultural productivity, food security, and climate resilience. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of seed production systems, plant breeding techniques, varietal development, and modern agricultural innovation processes that drive improved crop performance and sustainable farming systems.

High-quality seed is one of the most critical inputs in agriculture, directly influencing yield potential, pest resistance, drought tolerance, and nutritional value of crops. Participants will explore how formal and informal seed systems operate and how they can be strengthened to support smallholder and commercial farmers.

The course introduces advanced plant breeding approaches including conventional breeding, hybridization, molecular breeding, and biotechnology applications. It emphasizes the development of improved crop varieties that respond to environmental stresses, market demands, and changing climate conditions.

A strong focus is placed on seed system development, including seed production, certification, quality control, distribution networks, and regulatory frameworks. Participants will gain practical knowledge on how to ensure seed availability, accessibility, and affordability for farming communities.

Innovation in agriculture is rapidly transforming seed systems through digital tools, genetic research, and private sector engagement. This training explores how innovation ecosystems can be leveraged to improve seed quality, enhance breeding efficiency, and accelerate agricultural transformation.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, manage, and strengthen seed systems and breeding programs that improve productivity, resilience, and sustainability in agricultural production systems.
