Course Introduction
Non-governmental organizations increasingly operate in complex, fragile, and high-risk environments where staff safety, asset protection, and operational continuity are constant concerns. The Security Risk Management and Duty of Care for NGOs Training Course is designed to equip humanitarian and development professionals with practical skills to identify, assess, and mitigate security risks while ensuring organizational compliance with duty of care obligations. The course emphasizes safeguarding personnel, programmes, and reputation in volatile and unpredictable contexts.
As NGOs expand into remote, conflict-affected, disaster-prone, and politically sensitive areas, they face heightened exposure to threats such as crime, kidnapping, civil unrest, terrorism, health emergencies, and natural disasters. In addition, organizations are legally and ethically responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their staff, partners, and volunteers. Failure to implement effective duty of care systems can lead to severe human, operational, legal, and reputational consequences. This training provides structured approaches to managing these risks effectively.
The programme explores comprehensive security risk management frameworks, including risk assessment methodologies, threat analysis, context monitoring, and mitigation planning. Participants will learn how to integrate security considerations into programme design, field operations, logistics, and partner management. The course demonstrates how security risk management is not an isolated function but an essential component of organizational resilience and effectiveness.
Special focus is placed on duty of care obligations, staff safety policies, security protocols, incident management systems, crisis response planning, evacuation procedures, and travel risk management. Participants will gain practical tools for developing security plans, implementing communication protocols, and ensuring staff preparedness through training and awareness programmes. Real-life case studies highlight best practices and lessons learned from field operations.
The course also addresses emerging risks affecting NGOs, including cyber threats, misinformation, climate-related hazards, pandemics, digital surveillance, drone risks, and evolving conflict dynamics. Participants will explore how technological advancements and global instability are reshaping humanitarian security environments and organizational duty of care expectations.
By the end of the programme, participants will possess the competencies required to design and implement effective security risk management systems, strengthen duty of care frameworks, respond to crises effectively, and build organizational resilience. The training prepares NGOs to operate safely and sustainably while protecting staff, assets, and programmatic impact.
