Course Introduction

The Securities Trading and Investment Operations Audit Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for auditing the governance, controls, processes, systems, and risk-management practices supporting securities trading and investment operations. Securities activities involve significant financial values, market volatility, complex instruments, multiple counterparties, custodians, exchanges, and settlement infrastructures, making effective operational and financial controls essential.

The course examines the end-to-end securities transaction lifecycle, beginning with investment decisions and order initiation and continuing through trade execution, capture, confirmation, clearing, settlement, custody, valuation, accounting, reconciliation, and reporting. Participants will learn how to determine whether transactions are authorized, accurately recorded, appropriately settled, independently verified, properly valued, and supported by sufficient audit evidence.

A strong emphasis is placed on investment governance and trading controls. Participants will examine investment mandates, delegated authorities, approved instruments, portfolio limits, concentration limits, counterparty restrictions, dealing controls, segregation of duties, conflicts of interest, and exception management. The course develops practical audit procedures for assessing whether investment decisions and securities transactions remain within approved risk parameters and organizational policies.

The programme also addresses securities valuation, financial reporting, investment income, impairment, realized and unrealized gains and losses, fair-value measurements, and portfolio accounting. Participants will explore controls over market data, independent price verification, valuation models, accrued income, corporate actions, accounting classifications, and reconciliation between investment systems, custodians, brokers, subledgers, and the general ledger.

Modern investment operations increasingly depend on electronic trading platforms, automated order management, straight-through processing, digital custody, APIs, cloud infrastructure, data analytics, and third-party service providers. The course therefore incorporates technology risks, cybersecurity, access controls, system interfaces, data integrity, automated controls, operational resilience, artificial intelligence, and continuous monitoring.

Through practical audit exercises and an integrated securities trading and investment operations case study, participants will develop the ability to identify control weaknesses, investigate unusual transactions, evaluate operational and financial exposures, test transaction populations, and communicate meaningful audit findings. The programme supports professionals in strengthening investment governance, protecting assets, improving operational accuracy, and delivering effective assurance over securities activities.
