Course Introduction

Land degradation and desertification remain some of the most pressing environmental challenges, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. These processes threaten agricultural productivity, water resources, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of millions of people across the globe. Effective monitoring and mitigation require advanced tools capable of capturing environmental changes over time and across vast landscapes.

Satellite image processing has emerged as a key scientific approach for understanding and combating land degradation. By integrating Earth observation technologies with geospatial analysis, stakeholders can track land cover changes, soil erosion, vegetation loss, and desertification dynamics with accuracy and efficiency.

This course introduces participants to advanced methods in satellite image acquisition, pre-processing, classification, and interpretation specifically tailored for land degradation and desertification studies. Learners will be equipped to assess the severity, extent, and drivers of degradation through modern image processing workflows.

Participants will gain practical experience in using remote sensing indices, time-series analysis, and change detection techniques to evaluate soil health, vegetation dynamics, and land-use pressures. The training emphasizes both scientific rigor and practical application in real-world environmental management.

Through case studies, participants will explore how satellite data supports international efforts like the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) and how monitoring aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13 and SDG 15).

By the end of the course, learners will be able to apply cutting-edge satellite image processing skills to generate actionable insights for sustainable land management, restoration planning, and desertification control.
