Introduction

Road infrastructure is fundamental to economic development, regional connectivity, trade facilitation, and access to essential services. However, increasing traffic volumes, aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and changing climatic conditions continue to threaten the performance and sustainability of road networks. The Road Construction, Maintenance, Rehabilitation and Stormwater Drainage Training Course provides participants with comprehensive technical knowledge and practical skills to plan, construct, maintain, rehabilitate, and manage resilient road infrastructure while improving operational efficiency and long-term asset performance.

Effective road construction requires an integrated understanding of geometric design, pavement engineering, construction materials, geotechnical conditions, traffic loading, and quality assurance procedures. Poor construction practices, inappropriate material selection, inadequate compaction, and insufficient drainage provisions can significantly reduce pavement service life and increase maintenance costs. This training programme examines modern road construction methodologies, engineering standards, construction supervision practices, and emerging technologies that improve structural integrity, construction productivity, environmental performance, and overall project delivery.

Road maintenance and rehabilitation are essential components of sustainable infrastructure management, particularly where limited public resources must support expanding transportation networks. Road authorities increasingly require systematic approaches to pavement condition assessment, defect identification, maintenance prioritization, rehabilitation design, and lifecycle cost optimization. Participants will explore preventive, routine, periodic, and emergency maintenance strategies, together with pavement strengthening techniques, rehabilitation technologies, and evidence-based decision-making tools that extend infrastructure service life while minimizing disruptions to road users.

Stormwater drainage is a critical determinant of road durability, traffic safety, environmental protection, and climate resilience. Inadequate surface and subsurface drainage can accelerate pavement deterioration, undermine road foundations, cause erosion, damage bridges and culverts, and contribute to severe flooding in urban and rural environments. This course provides practical guidance on hydrological analysis, hydraulic design, roadside drainage systems, culvert sizing, stormwater conveyance, flood mitigation, erosion control, and sustainable drainage solutions that protect road assets under increasingly variable rainfall conditions.

The programme also addresses emerging developments transforming the road infrastructure sector, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), artificial intelligence, drone-based inspections, digital twins, intelligent compaction, recycled pavement materials, low-carbon construction technologies, and climate-adaptive infrastructure planning. Participants will examine how these innovations support more accurate infrastructure assessments, predictive maintenance, efficient resource allocation, real-time construction monitoring, and environmentally responsible road development. Special attention is given to nature-based drainage solutions, circular construction practices, and resilience against extreme weather events.

Through technical presentations, practical engineering exercises, case studies, group discussions, field-based examples, and applied design activities, participants will strengthen their ability to address real-world road infrastructure challenges. The training emphasizes the integration of construction quality, pavement performance, maintenance planning, rehabilitation engineering, and stormwater management within a unified infrastructure asset management framework. By the end of the programme, participants will be better equipped to deliver durable, safe, cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and climate-resilient road infrastructure projects.
