Course Introduction

River basin planning and management is a critical discipline focused on the sustainable development, allocation, and protection of water resources within entire river systems. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of integrated basin-scale water governance and planning frameworks.

The program explores how upstream and downstream interactions within a river basin influence water availability, quality, ecosystem health, and socio-economic development. Participants will gain insight into holistic basin management approaches.

A key focus is placed on integrated water resources management (IWRM) principles applied at river basin scale, ensuring coordination across sectors such as agriculture, industry, urban development, and environmental conservation.

Participants will also examine hydrological, ecological, and socio-economic dimensions of river basin systems. The course emphasizes data-driven decision-making for sustainable water allocation and infrastructure development.

The course further addresses transboundary water governance, stakeholder coordination, and conflict resolution in shared river basins. It highlights the importance of cooperation among riparian states and institutions.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design and evaluate river basin management plans that balance development needs with ecological sustainability and climate resilience.

Duration

5 days
