Introduction

Building resilient livelihoods has become a critical priority in the face of increasing climate variability, environmental degradation, economic shocks, and protracted conflicts. The Resilient Livelihoods Training Course is designed to equip development practitioners, humanitarian actors, and policymakers with practical knowledge and skills to support communities in strengthening their capacity to adapt, recover, and thrive amid crises and long-term pressures. This course emphasizes an integrated approach that combines risk reduction, resource management, and inclusive development.

Participants will explore the core concepts and frameworks underpinning resilience thinking, including the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA), vulnerability analysis, asset-based strategies, and climate-smart practices. The course addresses the linkages between natural resource management, food security, market systems, and social protection as part of a holistic livelihoods strategy. Participants will also learn how to assess livelihood risks and design context-specific interventions that reduce vulnerability and build long-term sustainability.

Through a mix of interactive lectures, real-world case studies, group discussions, and scenario-based exercises, the course fosters critical thinking and application of tools such as participatory livelihood assessments, value chain analysis, and early warning systems. Emphasis is placed on inclusive approaches that promote gender equality, social inclusion, and the empowerment of marginalized populations in resilience-building efforts.

This course is ideal for staff working in NGOs, UN agencies, government departments, and community-based organizations engaged in livelihoods, food security, DRR, and climate adaptation programs. By the end of the course, participants will have developed practical strategies and action plans that can be implemented in their respective programs to build and sustain resilient livelihoods across diverse contexts.
