Course Introduction

Resettlement, reintegration, and durable solutions for refugees are at the core of humanitarian and development efforts to restore dignity, stability, and opportunity for displaced populations. With global displacement at unprecedented levels, it is essential for humanitarian professionals to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to design and implement effective solutions that meet the needs of refugees and host communities alike.

This course provides a deep dive into the frameworks, policies, and practical tools guiding refugee resettlement and reintegration processes. Participants will explore global and regional approaches to durable solutions, including voluntary repatriation, local integration, and third-country resettlement, within the context of international law and humanitarian practice.

The training emphasizes the critical role of protection, livelihood support, community participation, and psychosocial well-being in designing sustainable reintegration and resettlement programs. Case studies from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and beyond provide real-world insights into the complexities of implementing durable solutions in protracted refugee situations and post-conflict recovery contexts.

Participants will also analyze the evolving roles of states, UNHCR, NGOs, and other stakeholders in managing refugee solutions, while considering the political, economic, and security challenges that shape responses. The course also highlights cross-cutting issues such as gender, youth empowerment, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in durable solutions strategies.

A forward-looking component of the course examines emerging issues, including climate-induced displacement, urban refugee integration, and the use of digital innovation to support resettlement and reintegration processes. This ensures participants are prepared for both current and future challenges.

By the end of the course, participants will have a strong foundation in refugee protection, durable solutions frameworks, and program design strategies, enabling them to contribute to inclusive, rights-based, and sustainable solutions for displaced populations.
