Course Introduction
Research protocols provide the foundation for well-structured, ethically sound, methodologically rigorous, and reproducible studies. This Research Protocol Development and Study Design Training Course equips participants with practical skills for developing comprehensive research protocols that clearly translate research questions into appropriate study designs, methodological procedures, data requirements, analytical strategies, ethical safeguards, and implementation plans.
The course provides a systematic framework for moving from an initial research idea to a complete and operational study protocol. Participants learn how to formulate research problems, objectives, hypotheses, research questions, endpoints, variables, populations, sampling strategies, data collection procedures, and analysis plans while maintaining logical alignment across every component of the study.
Participants will examine quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, experimental, observational, longitudinal, cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, intervention, evaluation, and exploratory study designs. The course emphasizes selecting designs according to research objectives, available evidence, feasibility, ethical requirements, data characteristics, and the type of conclusions the study is intended to support.
The programme also addresses protocol quality, version control, methodological documentation, feasibility assessment, risk management, research governance, ethical considerations, data management, quality assurance, and reproducibility. Participants learn how to identify weaknesses in draft protocols and strengthen them before research implementation, funding submission, ethics review, or registration.
Practical attention is given to developing sampling plans, measurement frameworks, data collection instruments, statistical analysis plans, qualitative analysis strategies, recruitment procedures, monitoring arrangements, adverse-event procedures where relevant, and data quality controls. Participants also explore how research protocols should evolve when legitimate methodological changes become necessary during study implementation.
Emerging considerations including digital research methods, remote and decentralized studies, real-world data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, adaptive study designs, electronic data capture, reproducible research workflows, preregistration, registered reports, and open science are incorporated into the course. By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to develop coherent, transparent, feasible, and implementation-ready research protocols for diverse study environments.
