Course Introduction

Public controversies can develop rapidly from allegations, executive decisions, customer complaints, activist campaigns, regulatory concerns, employee disputes, social media incidents, or unexpected public criticism. This course provides a strategic framework for managing reputation during high-scrutiny situations while maintaining credibility, consistency, transparency, and stakeholder confidence.

Reputation management during controversy requires more than reactive media handling. Organisations must understand how narratives form, how different stakeholder groups interpret events, and how traditional media, social platforms, online communities, search engines, and emerging AI systems can amplify competing versions of events. Participants learn to integrate intelligence, strategy, governance, and communication into a coordinated response.

The course examines practical methods for assessing the reputational significance of a controversy, identifying affected stakeholders, monitoring sentiment and narratives, detecting misinformation, and distinguishing genuine public concern from coordinated or artificial amplification. Advanced analytics and AI-assisted research are explored as tools for improving speed and situational awareness while retaining human judgement and accountability.

Particular attention is given to controversies involving allegations, misconduct claims, customer or employee grievances, leadership decisions, controversial policies, corporate conduct, public criticism, activist pressure, leaked information, and rapidly evolving media narratives. Participants learn how to construct defensible communication positions without making unsupported claims, prejudicing investigations, or escalating unnecessary conflict.

The programme also addresses modern information threats, including misinformation, disinformation, rumours, manipulated documents, synthetic media, deepfakes, impersonation, automated accounts, fabricated engagement, and AI-generated narratives. Participants develop approaches for verifying information, protecting source integrity, coordinating internally, and responding proportionately to emerging threats.

By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to anticipate controversy, assess reputational exposure, advise leadership, coordinate stakeholders, develop credible response strategies, manage media and digital scrutiny, and support long-term reputation recovery. The emphasis throughout is on disciplined judgement, ethical communication, resilience, transparency, and measurable reputation outcomes.
