Introduction

Remote sensing has become an indispensable tool for monitoring and assessing the health of aquatic ecosystems, providing critical insights into the quality of water in lakes and rivers. With increasing human activities, climate change, and pollution exerting pressure on freshwater resources, remote sensing technologies offer scalable, cost-effective, and real-time solutions to track environmental changes.

This course provides participants with an in-depth understanding of how satellite imagery, drone-based sensing, and advanced data analytics are applied to detect, measure, and manage key water quality parameters such as turbidity, chlorophyll concentration, temperature variations, and harmful algal blooms.

Participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in using remote sensing platforms, data collection protocols, and geospatial software for effective water quality assessment. The course emphasizes applications relevant to environmental monitoring, water resource management, and policy development.

Emerging topics such as machine learning applications in aquatic remote sensing, integration of IoT with remote sensing, and the use of big data in predictive water quality modeling are also covered. This ensures learners are prepared for contemporary and future challenges in aquatic ecosystem monitoring.

Through hands-on exercises, real-world case studies, and expert-led discussions, learners will develop proficiency in interpreting remote sensing data, translating findings into actionable insights, and supporting sustainable management of lakes and rivers.

By the end of the course, participants will have built the expertise to design, implement, and evaluate water quality monitoring projects that leverage remote sensing technologies, enhancing decision-making processes for research, conservation, and water governance.
