Course Introduction

Volcanoes and earthquakes remain some of the most destructive natural hazards, posing immense threats to lives, infrastructure, and economies worldwide. Effective monitoring and hazard mapping are critical for preparedness, early warning, and risk mitigation.

Remote sensing has emerged as a transformative tool in understanding geological processes, enabling real-time monitoring of volcanic activity and seismic landscapes. By integrating satellite imagery, geospatial data, and advanced modeling, remote sensing supports hazard detection and informed decision-making.

This course provides participants with advanced knowledge of remote sensing applications for volcano and seismic hazard mapping. It combines scientific theory with practical skills in image interpretation, data processing, and hazard modeling.

Learners will gain hands-on experience with optical, radar, and thermal data for monitoring volcanic eruptions, land deformation, seismic zones, and fault lines. They will also explore the use of drones and emerging technologies in geohazard studies.

In addition, the course highlights how remote sensing informs disaster preparedness policies, land-use planning, and community resilience strategies in high-risk areas. Case studies from regions with active volcanoes and seismic activity will provide practical perspectives.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and interpret remote sensing-based hazard mapping projects that support disaster risk reduction and improve resilience against geohazards.
