Course Introduction

The cryosphere plays a critical role in regulating Earth’s climate, freshwater resources, and sea-level dynamics. Monitoring snow, ice, and glaciers is therefore central to understanding global environmental change. Remote sensing has become the most effective tool for capturing long-term, large-scale, and hard-to-access cryospheric environments.

This course provides a detailed exploration of the principles, methodologies, and applications of remote sensing in snow and ice studies. Learners will examine different satellite platforms, sensors, and algorithms used in cryospheric monitoring, including optical, radar, and thermal imaging.

Participants will learn to apply remote sensing data in measuring snow cover extent, monitoring glacier retreat, detecting permafrost thaw, and modeling seasonal melt dynamics. The course emphasizes the integration of Earth observation data with climate and hydrological models to assess future impacts on water resources and ecosystems.

Emerging technologies such as UAVs, radar interferometry, LiDAR, and AI-based image analysis will be introduced to demonstrate their expanding role in snow and glacial research. Practical sessions will involve case studies of iconic glaciers, snow-fed river basins, and polar ice monitoring projects.

The course also addresses the societal and policy dimensions of snow and ice monitoring, such as water security for downstream communities, disaster risks from glacial lake outbursts, and global contributions to sea-level rise.

By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to use remote sensing as a powerful tool for cryospheric science, water resource management, climate adaptation, and environmental conservation.
