Introduction

Urbanization is rapidly transforming landscapes, often leading to urban sprawl, land fragmentation, and inefficient land use. These changes place immense pressure on ecosystems, infrastructure, and governance, while creating challenges in sustainable development and urban planning.

Remote sensing offers powerful tools for analyzing spatial growth patterns, monitoring land cover changes, and detecting fragmentation processes over time. By integrating satellite imagery with GIS, urban planners and decision-makers can make evidence-based interventions that promote more compact, resilient, and sustainable cities.

This course provides a comprehensive framework for using remote sensing in monitoring urban sprawl and land fragmentation. Participants will gain skills in image classification, spatial metrics, and change detection techniques to track urban growth and its impacts on land systems.

A strong emphasis is placed on integrating remote sensing data with socio-economic indicators to provide a holistic understanding of the drivers and consequences of urban expansion. Through this, learners will be able to assess how sprawl influences inequality, infrastructure demand, and environmental degradation.

Participants will explore global and regional case studies that demonstrate best practices in managing urban growth, preventing land degradation, and designing sustainable settlement patterns. Practical exercises using cutting-edge tools will strengthen applied learning.

By the end of the course, professionals will be equipped to leverage remote sensing and GIS in developing monitoring frameworks, shaping urban policies, and supporting sustainable land governance strategies that address both present and future urban challenges.
