Course Introduction

Desert locusts and pest outbreaks remain one of the greatest threats to global food security, rural livelihoods, and sustainable agriculture. These infestations, often exacerbated by climate change, deforestation, and ecosystem imbalance, can devastate crops across vast regions in a matter of weeks. Early detection and rapid response are therefore critical to minimize losses and protect vulnerable communities.

Remote sensing technologies have become indispensable in providing timely, accurate, and scalable information for monitoring pest movements and predicting outbreak patterns. By leveraging satellite imagery, UAVs (drones), and geospatial data analytics, experts can track vegetation health, climatic variables, and locust swarm dynamics, enabling proactive intervention.

This training equips participants with the skills to use advanced remote sensing tools to identify, analyze, and predict locust and pest outbreaks. Learners will explore methodologies for integrating remote sensing data with ground-based surveillance and field reporting systems to create reliable early warning systems.

Practical sessions will guide participants through the use of platforms such as MODIS, Sentinel, and Landsat, as well as emerging AI-driven image analysis techniques. The course emphasizes real-world case studies from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, where remote sensing has played a crucial role in crisis management.

Beyond pest monitoring, participants will also gain insight into how remote sensing supports policy formulation, regional collaboration, and climate adaptation strategies. This ensures that technical capacity is complemented by an understanding of institutional and governance frameworks.

By the end of the course, participants will have mastered practical skills to use remote sensing for agricultural risk reduction, ensuring more resilient food systems and improved preparedness against future outbreaks.
