Course Introduction

Hydrological systems and watersheds are fundamental to sustaining life, supporting ecosystems, agriculture, energy, and human settlements. However, pressures from climate change, population growth, land use change, and increasing water demand have made monitoring and managing these systems more complex than ever.

Remote sensing provides unique capabilities for hydrological and watershed analysis by offering large-scale, consistent, and continuous data on precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, river discharge, snow cover, and land cover change. These insights are essential for planning, conservation, and sustainable water resource management.

This course, Remote Sensing for Hydrological and Watershed Analysis, is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills to use satellite and UAV data, GIS techniques, and modeling approaches for hydrological applications. It bridges the gap between traditional hydrological methods and modern geospatial technologies.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in analyzing hydrological parameters using Earth observation datasets such as Landsat, Sentinel, MODIS, SMAP, and TRMM. They will learn how to map watersheds, monitor water availability, assess flood and drought risks, and evaluate land use impacts on hydrology.

The course emphasizes integrated watershed management by showing how remote sensing supports water governance, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation strategies. Case studies from river basins, wetlands, and transboundary watersheds will highlight real-world applications.

By the end of the program, participants will have the expertise to design hydrological studies using remote sensing, create watershed monitoring systems, and produce actionable outputs that inform water resource planning, environmental management, and policy-making.
