Course Introduction

Coastal and marine ecosystems are among the most productive and diverse environments on Earth, playing a critical role in supporting biodiversity, regulating climate, and sustaining human livelihoods. However, these fragile ecosystems face unprecedented threats from climate change, overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation. Effective monitoring and management are therefore essential to ensure their long-term sustainability. Remote sensing has emerged as a powerful tool for capturing, analyzing, and interpreting large-scale data to support evidence-based conservation and decision-making.

This course on Remote Sensing for Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Monitoring equips participants with the technical skills and scientific knowledge required to apply satellite and aerial data for environmental research and resource management. The course integrates advanced remote sensing techniques, GIS-based spatial analysis, and marine-specific applications to provide a holistic approach to monitoring oceanographic and coastal processes.

Participants will gain practical skills in using remote sensing datasets to detect changes in coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, estuaries, and marine pollution. The course places a strong emphasis on data processing, interpretation, and integration with socio-environmental frameworks to support marine conservation, fisheries management, and climate adaptation strategies.

The training blends theory with practice, enabling learners to work with widely used platforms such as Google Earth Engine, ArcGIS, QGIS, and specialized marine remote sensing datasets like MODIS, Sentinel, and Landsat. Case studies and real-world examples from across the globe will be used to illustrate how remote sensing contributes to the monitoring of coastal erosion, water quality, marine biodiversity, and the impacts of climate change.

In addition to technical knowledge, participants will develop an understanding of governance frameworks, policy applications, and international initiatives supporting sustainable ocean and coastal management. This ensures that the skills acquired can be effectively applied within research, consultancy, government, and NGO contexts.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped not only with advanced geospatial skills but also with a comprehensive understanding of how remote sensing contributes to sustainable marine resource management, coastal resilience, and the protection of vital ocean ecosystems.
