Course Introduction

Forests and ecosystems provide invaluable services ranging from carbon sequestration to water regulation and biodiversity conservation. However, climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable land use are putting these ecosystems under increasing pressure. Remote sensing has emerged as a transformative tool in monitoring, managing, and safeguarding forestry and ecosystem services in the face of these challenges.

This course offers an in-depth exploration of how remote sensing technologies can support climate-smart forestry practices and the sustainable management of ecosystem services. Participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in applying satellite imagery, drones, and geospatial analytics for forestry and ecological monitoring.

The training emphasizes climate-smart approaches, focusing on resilience, carbon accounting, land degradation monitoring, and ecosystem valuation. By leveraging remote sensing, participants will learn to design data-driven strategies that enhance both environmental sustainability and socio-economic development.

Through case studies from around the world, learners will explore applications such as monitoring REDD+ projects, mapping biodiversity hotspots, and analyzing land-use changes that affect ecosystem services. Practical sessions will include hands-on exercises in processing, interpreting, and visualizing forestry and ecological data.

Emerging themes such as AI-driven forest monitoring, Earth observation for climate resilience, and integration of geospatial intelligence with policy frameworks will also be addressed, equipping participants with forward-looking skills.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to use remote sensing technologies to develop climate-smart strategies, evaluate ecosystem service values, and inform decision-making for sustainable forestry and ecosystem management.
