Introduction

The sustainable management of forests and ecosystems is central to global climate action and carbon reduction strategies. Remote sensing has emerged as a powerful tool for accurately monitoring carbon stocks, assessing land cover change, and supporting REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiatives. This course provides participants with the technical and analytical capacity to apply geospatial tools in carbon accounting and monitoring frameworks.

The program emphasizes the use of satellite imagery, LiDAR, UAVs, and other advanced sensing technologies for biomass estimation and carbon stock assessment. Participants will gain insights into how remote sensing integrates with field-based inventory methods to provide robust and cost-effective monitoring solutions.

Learners will also explore REDD+ mechanisms, methodologies, and reporting frameworks that inform climate finance, conservation policies, and sustainable development goals. By bridging technical applications with global climate governance, the course enables participants to connect science with policy.

Case studies from tropical forests, mangroves, and drylands will demonstrate practical applications of remote sensing in diverse ecosystems. Participants will also be exposed to challenges in uncertainty analysis, ground-truthing, and integrating multi-source data.

Through a mix of theoretical instruction, software-based training, and project work, the course prepares professionals to design and implement carbon monitoring systems that align with international standards. Special focus is placed on tools such as Google Earth Engine, QGIS, and specialized biomass estimation software.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to produce accurate, verifiable, and transparent data that supports carbon accounting, REDD+ project design, and global climate commitments under frameworks such as the Paris Agreement.
