Course Introduction

Archaeology and cultural heritage preservation increasingly rely on modern geospatial technologies to uncover, analyze, and safeguard historical sites. Remote sensing offers archaeologists and heritage professionals powerful tools for detecting features, monitoring landscapes, and conserving cultural resources in a non-invasive way.

This course provides participants with an in-depth exploration of remote sensing applications in archaeology, emphasizing satellite imagery, aerial photography, LiDAR, UAVs, and multispectral/hyperspectral imaging. Through these technologies, participants will learn how to identify buried structures, map ancient landscapes, and monitor site changes over time.

Participants will engage with practical workflows that integrate GIS and remote sensing, enabling effective spatial analysis, predictive modeling, and 3D reconstructions of archaeological sites. Case studies from around the world will demonstrate how advanced techniques enhance both discovery and preservation.

The course also examines emerging issues in cultural heritage protection, including the impact of climate change, urbanization, looting, and conflict on archaeological sites. It emphasizes the role of geospatial technologies in documenting endangered heritage and supporting international preservation initiatives.

Hands-on sessions provide experience in using remote sensing tools, analyzing diverse datasets, and applying algorithms to detect features of archaeological significance. Emphasis is placed on interpreting results within cultural, historical, and environmental contexts.

By the end of this training, participants will have the technical capacity to design and implement remote sensing projects that contribute to archaeological research, site management, and the sustainable protection of cultural heritage worldwide.
