Introduction

Coastal zones are among the most dynamic and valuable ecosystems, supporting livelihoods, biodiversity, and global economies. However, they face growing pressures from climate change, urbanization, pollution, and unsustainable exploitation of marine resources. To safeguard these ecosystems while driving sustainable economic development, innovative monitoring and management approaches are essential.

This course explores the critical role of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in coastal zone management, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools to address pressing environmental and economic challenges. From shoreline mapping and habitat monitoring to marine spatial planning and disaster risk reduction, remote sensing and GIS provide essential decision-making insights.

Participants will learn how to harness satellite imagery, drone-based sensing, and spatial data analysis for integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), with a strong focus on supporting the growth of the blue economy. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and big data platforms, are also highlighted to strengthen monitoring capabilities.

The training emphasizes both ecological and economic dimensions, covering topics such as fisheries management, port operations, renewable energy, tourism, and maritime safety. By bridging environmental stewardship with sustainable economic growth, the course positions participants to lead in coastal resilience and blue economy innovation.

Hands-on sessions will allow learners to practice with leading GIS and remote sensing tools, building capacity to design, analyze, and interpret geospatial data for real-world coastal applications. Participants will also explore global case studies, highlighting successful strategies for balancing conservation with development.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to apply geospatial intelligence in advancing sustainable coastal management, building climate resilience, and unlocking opportunities in the rapidly growing blue economy.
