Course Introduction

Blue carbon ecosystems mangroves, seagrasses, and saltmarshes play a pivotal role in climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and coastal resilience. This course explores the integration of remote sensing and GIS to monitor, map, and manage these ecosystems effectively.

Participants will be introduced to the ecological and socio-economic importance of blue carbon systems, gaining insights into how these ecosystems sequester carbon and provide vital ecosystem services for coastal communities.

The course emphasizes the use of geospatial technologies to assess ecosystem extent, health, and change detection, equipping learners with the ability to generate high-quality, decision-support data.

Advanced modules cover emerging approaches such as drone-based monitoring, hyperspectral imaging, AI-driven classification, and integration with oceanographic data for more precise and comprehensive analysis.

A strong policy and governance dimension is included, enabling learners to connect scientific insights with climate strategies, blue economy initiatives, and international biodiversity frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and Global Biodiversity Framework.

By the end, participants will have the technical, analytical, and policy knowledge to drive evidence-based actions that safeguard and restore blue carbon ecosystems.
