Course Introduction

The REDD+ Project Planning and Implementation Course provides a comprehensive framework for professionals responsible for developing, planning, financing, implementing, monitoring, and managing initiatives designed to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation while supporting sustainable forest management, conservation, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. The course connects REDD+ principles with practical project management and implementation requirements.

Participants will explore the REDD+ project lifecycle, including opportunity identification, jurisdictional and project-level approaches, baseline development, reference levels, additionality considerations, safeguards, stakeholder engagement, benefit sharing, monitoring, reporting, verification, and results-based payments. The program provides practical guidance for translating forest and climate objectives into credible REDD+ programs that can deliver measurable environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

The course develops practical capabilities in forest and land-use assessment, drivers of deforestation analysis, intervention design, project boundaries, activity data, emission factors, carbon accounting, risk assessment, feasibility analysis, implementation planning, budgeting, procurement, and performance management. Participants will learn how to develop REDD+ implementation strategies that respond to local drivers while aligning with national policies, forest governance systems, climate commitments, and applicable carbon market requirements.

Strong emphasis is placed on REDD+ financing and carbon market participation. Participants will examine results-based finance, carbon credit revenues, climate finance, donor funding, jurisdictional programs, private investment, blended finance, benefit-sharing mechanisms, and carbon market transactions. The course also considers evolving requirements around corresponding adjustments, Article 6, nested approaches, corresponding claims, credit integrity, and the relationship between national accounting and project-level activities.

Environmental and social safeguards are addressed throughout the program, with particular attention to indigenous peoples and local communities, land and resource rights, participation, grievance mechanisms, gender inclusion, livelihoods, biodiversity, leakage, permanence, and equitable benefit sharing. Participants will learn how strong stakeholder engagement and safeguards can support legitimate REDD+ implementation, reduce social risks, and improve the durability of forest conservation outcomes.

The course also incorporates modern monitoring and implementation technologies, including GIS, satellite imagery, remote sensing, drones, forest inventories, artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital MRV, geospatial analytics, and forest monitoring platforms. By the end of the program, participants will be better prepared to plan and implement REDD+ initiatives that are technically credible, socially inclusive, financially viable, transparent, and capable of delivering long-term forest and climate benefits.
