Course Introduction

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) has emerged as a critical global mechanism for mitigating climate change while promoting sustainable forest management. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of REDD+ frameworks, strategies, and implementation approaches for effective forest carbon management and environmental sustainability.

As countries strive to meet international climate commitments under agreements such as the Paris Agreement, the need for professionals skilled in REDD+ implementation has increased significantly. This training equips participants with the technical, institutional, and policy knowledge required to design, implement, and manage REDD+ programs at national and sub-national levels.

The course explores key concepts including forest carbon accounting, emissions reduction strategies, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. Participants will gain insights into how forest ecosystems contribute to carbon sequestration and how these contributions can be quantified and leveraged for climate mitigation efforts.

Participants will also examine governance, financing, and stakeholder engagement aspects of REDD+ programs. The course emphasizes inclusive approaches that integrate community participation, indigenous knowledge, and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms to ensure sustainability and social acceptance.

Emerging issues such as carbon markets, climate finance, digital monitoring technologies, and nature-based solutions are incorporated into the training. Participants will learn how to leverage innovations such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in REDD+ programs.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with practical skills to implement REDD+ initiatives, manage forest carbon projects, and contribute to global climate mitigation efforts. The program aims to strengthen institutional capacity and support sustainable forest governance and carbon management systems.
