Course Introduction

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) have become important components of international climate action, forest conservation, and results-based climate finance. Successful REDD+ initiatives require coordinated planning, sound forest science, transparent governance, reliable carbon accounting, effective community participation, and strong implementation controls. The REDD+ and Forest Carbon Project Management Course equips professionals with practical knowledge and management tools to develop, appraise, finance, implement, monitor, and sustain forest carbon programmes and projects that support credible emissions reductions, biodiversity protection, and sustainable livelihoods.

The course examines the international climate policy architecture, national REDD+ strategies, forest reference levels, safeguards, and institutional arrangements that influence forest carbon initiatives. Participants explore the relationship between the Paris Agreement, national climate commitments, forest monitoring systems, and results-based payments. The programme distinguishes jurisdictional and national REDD+ approaches from project-level forest carbon activities, clarifying their respective governance structures, accounting requirements, financing pathways, and implementation responsibilities. Participants also examine how evolving carbon market rules, host-country authorization procedures, and international reporting requirements affect project design, forest carbon accounting, and access to climate finance.

Effective REDD+ and forest carbon project delivery begins with rigorous assessment and planning. Participants learn to analyze deforestation and forest degradation drivers, establish project boundaries, assess forest conditions, develop baselines, evaluate additionality where applicable, and estimate potential emissions reductions or carbon removals using appropriate methods. The course addresses land tenure, forest resource rights, stakeholder mapping, feasibility assessment, implementation scheduling, budget preparation, procurement, and institutional coordination. Participants also explore the selection of suitable project interventions, including forest protection, sustainable forest management, assisted natural regeneration, agroforestry, restoration, and community-led conservation, while recognizing the distinct methodological requirements of different activities.

A major focus of the programme is forest carbon measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). Participants examine forest inventories, sampling design, biomass estimation, carbon pools, allometric equations, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and field-based validation. The course addresses uncertainty management, leakage, permanence, reversal risk, double counting, monitoring frequency, and the documentation needed to support credible reporting and independent verification. It also explores the application of digital MRV platforms, satellite imagery, drones, LiDAR where appropriate, and responsible artificial intelligence for forest change detection and data analysis. Emphasis is placed on data quality, transparent assumptions, traceable calculations, and defensible carbon accounting.

Financial sustainability and social legitimacy are equally important to forest carbon project success. The course examines results-based payments, grants, climate finance, carbon credit revenue, blended finance, benefit-sharing arrangements, and the commercial considerations associated with forest carbon transactions. Participants learn to assess project costs, forecast potential revenue, analyze carbon price uncertainty, manage contracts, and establish financial accountability controls. The programme also addresses Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ rights, land and carbon rights, informed participation, gender-responsive implementation, grievance mechanisms, and equitable benefit sharing. Participants examine how weak consultation, unclear ownership, or inadequate safeguards can undermine project credibility and create significant legal, financial, and reputational risks.

The programme concludes by strengthening participants’ ability to manage REDD+ and forest carbon initiatives throughout their operational lifecycle, from initial concept development to long-term monitoring, verification, reporting, and benefit distribution. Participants learn to establish project governance, manage delivery risks, track performance against ecological and financial targets, prepare audit-ready documentation, and apply adaptive management when forest conditions or implementation assumptions change. The course also explores emerging developments in jurisdictional REDD+, Article 6 cooperation, integrity-focused carbon markets, biodiversity outcomes, and digital forest monitoring. By the end of the programme, participants will be better prepared to deliver accountable forest carbon initiatives that support climate mitigation, forest conservation, community resilience, and sustainable landscape management.
