Course Introduction

Knowledge economies and innovation systems are driven by the creation, management, and strategic use of information and records. In such environments, data, research outputs, intellectual property, and institutional knowledge must be properly governed to support innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable development. This course provides a comprehensive framework for managing records governance in knowledge-driven and innovation-focused ecosystems.

In modern economies, organizations increasingly rely on research institutions, universities, innovation hubs, startups, and R&D centers to generate new ideas and technologies. These activities produce vast amounts of records that must be structured, preserved, and leveraged effectively. Without proper governance, valuable knowledge assets are lost, duplicated, or underutilized, reducing innovation potential and economic competitiveness.

A central focus of the course is on how records governance supports knowledge creation, storage, sharing, and reuse across innovation systems. Participants will explore how structured records management enhances collaboration between academia, industry, and government, enabling effective knowledge transfer and commercialization of research outputs.

The course also examines the role of digital platforms, data repositories, research information systems, and open knowledge infrastructures in supporting innovation ecosystems. These systems require strong governance frameworks to ensure data integrity, accessibility, intellectual property protection, and long-term preservation of knowledge assets.

Another key emphasis is placed on intellectual property (IP) management, research documentation, and innovation lifecycle governance. Participants will learn how well-managed records systems support patent processes, research validation, technology transfer, and innovation scaling within knowledge-based economies.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement advanced records governance frameworks that support knowledge economies and innovation systems. They will be prepared to enhance institutional learning, improve research efficiency, and strengthen national and organizational innovation capacity.
