Course Introduction
Public Health Data Management and Intelligence Training Course provides a comprehensive and practical programme for professionals responsible for collecting, managing, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating public health information. The course focuses on strengthening the ability of health organizations to transform diverse datasets into reliable intelligence that supports surveillance, programme planning, policy development, resource allocation, monitoring, evaluation, and population health improvement.
The programme examines the public health data ecosystem and the multiple sources of information used to understand population health conditions. Participants will explore routine health information systems, disease surveillance platforms, population surveys, registries, laboratory information, demographic data, programme monitoring systems, electronic health records, community-based reporting, and other sources that contribute to public health intelligence.
Participants will develop practical capabilities in data governance, data quality management, database organization, data integration, validation, cleaning, documentation, and information security. Particular attention is given to ensuring that public health data is complete, accurate, timely, consistent, accessible, and fit for purpose. Participants will also examine how effective data management practices can improve the reliability of downstream analysis and decision-making.
The course introduces analytical approaches used to transform public health data into actionable intelligence. Participants will explore descriptive and statistical analysis, indicator development, trend analysis, disease surveillance, geographic analysis, health equity assessment, programme performance analysis, and data visualization. The programme emphasizes interpreting results in context and communicating evidence in formats that are useful to technical teams, programme managers, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
A strong focus is also placed on public health intelligence and early identification of emerging issues. Participants will examine how data can support disease surveillance, outbreak monitoring, risk assessment, health service planning, population profiling, resource prioritization, and identification of geographic or demographic disparities. The training also considers how dashboards, automated reporting, GIS, predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence can strengthen modern public health information systems.
By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped with practical knowledge for managing public health information throughout its lifecycle and converting data into meaningful intelligence. The skills developed can be applied across ministries of health, public health agencies, hospitals, research institutions, NGOs, development programmes, laboratories, surveillance networks, and other organizations involved in population health management.
