Introduction

Development organizations and NGOs are increasingly leveraging digital tools and information systems to improve decision-making, enhance transparency, and demonstrate impact. This course on Project Information Systems and Digital Tools for Development Projects equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to plan, deploy, and manage digital solutions that support project success throughout the entire project lifecycle.

Participants will explore key concepts related to project information management, including data collection, monitoring and evaluation integration, real-time reporting, and data visualization. The course introduces widely used digital tools such as KoboToolbox, ODK, DHIS2, Power BI, and GIS applications, along with guidance on how to select and adapt these technologies to various development contexts. Emphasis is placed on practical, hands-on experience to build confidence in designing and using digital systems that are efficient, secure, and scalable.

The course also addresses critical topics such as data quality assurance, ethical data use, information security, and the alignment of systems with donor reporting requirements and government frameworks. Participants will learn how to build and sustain information systems that not only meet organizational needs but also empower teams and communities through timely, reliable, and actionable data.

Designed for program managers, M&E officers, ICT4D specialists, and other development professionals, this course provides a comprehensive foundation in managing project information using digital tools. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to implement robust, user-friendly systems that improve project outcomes, promote accountability, and support evidence-based programming in development settings.

Who Should Attend?

Professionals who will benefit from this course include:

·       Project and Program Managers overseeing development or humanitarian projects who need reliable information systems for planning, reporting, and decision-making

·       Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Officers seeking to integrate digital tools into data collection, analysis, and reporting

·       ICT4D (Information and Communication Technology for Development) Specialists working on digital solutions for project implementation and information management

·       Data Analysts and Information Management Officers responsible for managing and visualizing project data

·       NGO and Development Agency Staff involved in program design, grant reporting, or donor compliance

·       Field Officers and Enumerators using mobile and cloud-based tools for data collection and tracking project activities

·       Government and Donor Agency Representatives involved in oversight of development programs and data systems

Duration

5 days

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

·       Understand the role and importance of project information systems (PIS) in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating development and humanitarian projects.

·       Design and implement context-appropriate project information systems that align with organizational goals, donor requirements, and government reporting frameworks.

·       Select and apply digital tools and platforms (e.g., KoboToolbox, ODK, DHIS2, Power BI, GIS) for effective data collection, management, and analysis.

·       Develop practical skills in mobile and cloud-based data collection, including designing digital forms, deploying surveys, and managing field data.

·       Integrate monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) components into digital information systems to enhance real-time tracking and adaptive programming.

·       Apply best practices in data quality assurance, validation, and ethical data management, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and compliance with data protection standards.

·       Analyze and visualize project data using tools such as Excel, Power BI, and GIS to support evidence-based decision-making and stakeholder communication.

·       Identify and mitigate information system risks, including data security, access control, and system usability challenges in low-resource settings.

·       Promote cross-functional collaboration among program, IT, and M&E teams for effective implementation and use of project information systems.

·       Develop action plans to strengthen digital information management capacity within their organizations for long-term sustainability and impact.
