Course Introduction
Non-governmental organizations increasingly manage multiple projects, programs, grants, and partnerships simultaneously across diverse thematic areas, geographic regions, and donor requirements. While individual project management remains important, organizational success depends on the ability to strategically manage an entire portfolio of programs to maximize impact, optimize resources, and align investments with institutional priorities. This course provides participants with practical knowledge and tools for effective program portfolio management within complex NGO operating environments.
Program portfolio management enables organizations to make informed decisions about which programs to prioritize, expand, redesign, consolidate, or discontinue based on strategic relevance, performance, risk, and available resources. Through a structured portfolio approach, NGOs can ensure that individual projects contribute to broader organizational objectives while balancing donor expectations, beneficiary needs, operational capacities, and long-term sustainability goals. Participants will learn how to align portfolio decisions with organizational mission and strategy.
