Course Introduction
Problem Solving and Critical Thinking for Managers Course is designed to strengthen the analytical, evaluative, and decision-making capabilities managers need to address workplace challenges effectively. Managers are frequently required to interpret incomplete information, identify underlying causes, evaluate alternatives, and make sound decisions while balancing organizational priorities, stakeholder expectations, operational constraints, and available resources.
The course provides a structured approach to understanding problems before attempting to solve them. Participants will learn how to distinguish symptoms from root causes, frame problems accurately, gather relevant information, challenge assumptions, identify patterns, and evaluate evidence. These capabilities enable managers to avoid reactive decision-making and develop solutions that address the real sources of organizational and operational challenges.
Critical thinking is particularly important when managers encounter uncertainty, conflicting information, competing priorities, or rapidly changing circumstances. The programme explores practical techniques for questioning assumptions, recognizing cognitive biases, evaluating arguments, interpreting data, testing conclusions, and assessing risks. Participants will develop a disciplined approach that combines analytical thinking with professional judgement and practical business awareness.
The course also examines how effective problem solving depends on collaboration, communication, creativity, and stakeholder engagement. Managers will explore methods for involving teams in diagnosis and solution development, encouraging constructive challenge, managing different perspectives, and building ownership of agreed solutions. Emphasis is placed on balancing independent critical thinking with collaborative problem solving to achieve sustainable workplace outcomes.
Modern managers increasingly solve problems in technology-enabled environments involving automation, artificial intelligence, analytics, digital workflows, cybersecurity concerns, and rapidly changing customer and employee expectations. The course therefore considers emerging challenges such as AI-supported decision-making, information overload, data quality, algorithmic bias, digital transformation, and the need for human judgement when technology contributes to managerial analysis.
Through practical case studies, workplace scenarios, structured problem-solving exercises, decision simulations, group discussions, and reflective activities, participants will apply critical thinking techniques to realistic management situations. By the end of the course, managers will be better equipped to diagnose complex problems, evaluate evidence, generate practical solutions, make defensible decisions, and establish follow-through mechanisms that convert decisions into measurable results.

Create a practical personal action plan for embedding critical thinking, structured problem solving, sound judgement, and continuous improvement into everyday managerial practice.
Comprehensive Course Outline
Module 1: Foundations of Managerial Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
Understanding the relationship between critical thinking, managerial judgement, problem solving, decision-making, innovation, and organizational performance.
Distinguishing routine problems, complex problems, emerging problems, strategic challenges, and situations requiring judgement under uncertainty.
Examining the characteristics of effective critical thinkers, including curiosity, objectivity, intellectual discipline, openness, evidence-based reasoning, and constructive scepticism.
Identifying common weaknesses in managerial problem solving, including assumptions, premature conclusions, reactive thinking, groupthink, confirmation bias, and inadequate problem definition.
Module 2: Problem Identification, Definition and Framing
Recognizing the difference between symptoms, problems, causes, consequences, opportunities, and underlying organizational conditions.
Applying structured techniques to define problems clearly, establish boundaries, identify affected stakeholders, and determine the desired future state.
Using problem statements, issue trees, diagnostic questions, and scoping techniques to create a clear foundation for further analysis.
Reframing problems from multiple perspectives to uncover hidden assumptions, alternative interpretations, emerging risks, and opportunities for better solutions.
Module 3: Information Gathering, Evidence and Analytical Thinking
Identifying relevant information requirements and gathering reliable qualitative and quantitative evidence to support managerial problem analysis.
Evaluating the credibility, relevance, accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and potential bias of information used in decision-making.
Applying analytical questioning techniques to distinguish facts, interpretations, opinions, assumptions, correlations, and unsupported conclusions.
Managing information overload by prioritizing meaningful evidence and avoiding distractions created by excessive, irrelevant, duplicated, or poor-quality information.
Module 4: Root-Cause Analysis and Diagnostic Problem Solving
Applying practical root-cause analysis methods to move beyond visible symptoms and identify the underlying drivers of workplace problems.
Using techniques such as the five whys, cause-and-effect analysis, process mapping, fault analysis, and structured diagnostic questioning.
Analyzing interconnected causes across people, processes, technology, resources, policies, systems, communication, and organizational culture.
Developing corrective and preventive approaches that address root causes while considering emerging technology risks, changing processes, and future operational conditions.
Module 5: Cognitive Biases, Assumptions and Judgement
Recognizing cognitive biases that can influence managerial reasoning, including confirmation bias, availability bias, anchoring, overconfidence, and escalation of commitment.
Identifying hidden assumptions and testing whether beliefs, interpretations, and conclusions are supported by sufficient evidence.
Applying techniques for slowing down judgement, considering alternative explanations, seeking disconfirming evidence, and improving objectivity.
Managing groupthink and social pressure by creating environments where constructive disagreement, questioning, diverse perspectives, and evidence-based challenge are encouraged.
Module 6: Generating Creative Solutions and Evaluating Alternatives
Applying structured brainstorming, lateral thinking, design thinking, and other creative approaches to generate diverse and practical solutions.
Separating idea generation from evaluation to encourage creativity while preventing premature criticism from limiting potentially valuable alternatives.
Developing criteria for evaluating solutions based on feasibility, cost, risk, impact, resources, stakeholder acceptance, sustainability, and strategic alignment.
