Course Introduction

Primary healthcare facilities generate extensive data across outpatient consultations, maternal and child health, immunization, chronic disease management, communicable disease services, referrals, laboratory services, medicines, staffing, finances, community outreach, and health promotion activities. Effective analytics enables health managers and primary healthcare teams to understand service demand, monitor performance, identify service gaps, allocate resources, and strengthen the quality, accessibility, continuity, and efficiency of essential health services.

This course provides a practical framework for collecting, validating, integrating, analysing, and presenting primary healthcare performance data. Participants will examine information from health facility registers, electronic medical records, health information systems, community health programmes, laboratory systems, pharmacy and logistics systems, appointment records, referral platforms, and routine reporting tools. Particular emphasis is placed on data quality, completeness, timeliness, consistency, indicator definitions, data reconciliation, and the conversion of routine health information into actionable management intelligence.

The programme explores analytical methods for assessing patient volumes, service utilization, coverage, continuity of care, referral patterns, waiting times, workforce productivity, medicine availability, diagnostic services, and facility-level performance. Participants will learn how to analyse trends across facilities, populations, services, geographic areas, and time periods to identify performance variations and potential service-delivery gaps. These methods support managers in understanding demand, prioritizing interventions, and strengthening the delivery of integrated primary healthcare services.

Participants will develop practical skills in health performance dashboards, key performance indicators, scorecards, trend analysis, comparative analysis, geographic visualization, and management reporting. The course demonstrates how to analyse maternal and child health services, immunization, communicable and non-communicable disease programmes, referrals, community health activities, essential medicines, staffing, and resource utilization. Participants will learn how to communicate findings clearly to facility managers, health authorities, programme teams, community health structures, and other decision-makers.

Emerging technologies are increasingly transforming primary healthcare analytics through artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, electronic health records, mobile health platforms, community health applications, GIS, remote monitoring, digital decision-support systems, and automated reporting. The course introduces these technologies while addressing patient privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, interoperability, responsible AI, digital inclusion, data quality, and the need for appropriate human oversight when analytics inform healthcare planning and service delivery.

By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to develop practical primary healthcare performance analytics workflows, improve routine health data quality, analyse service utilization and coverage, identify performance gaps, build useful dashboards, monitor key indicators, and support evidence-based resource allocation. The practical approach enables participants to apply analytics to real primary healthcare challenges and develop integrated performance intelligence that supports continuous improvement, stronger service delivery, better population health outcomes, and more responsive primary healthcare systems.
