Course Introduction
The Prepayments and Accruals Auditing Training Course provides a practical framework for auditing prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, accrued liabilities, deferred costs, and other period-end accounting balances that require careful assessment of timing, recognition, allocation, and measurement. The course equips auditors with techniques for determining whether these balances are valid, complete, accurately measured, properly classified, adequately supported, and appropriately reflected in financial reporting.
The course examines the accounting processes through which prepayments and accruals are initiated, recorded, allocated, adjusted, reversed, reconciled, and reported. Participants learn how to assess supporting contracts, invoices, payment records, service periods, purchase orders, agreements, expense schedules, supplier statements, and subsequent transactions to determine whether costs have been recognized in the correct accounting period.
A major component of the training focuses on audit procedures for identifying omitted accruals and overstated or improperly carried-forward prepayments. Participants learn how to use subsequent payment testing, invoice reviews, goods and services received information, contract analysis, expense trend analysis, supplier statements, and cut-off testing to identify liabilities or expenses that may have been recorded in the wrong period or omitted entirely.
The program also addresses the estimation and allocation challenges associated with accruals and prepayments. Participants examine recurring accruals, estimated service costs, annual contracts, insurance, subscriptions, rent, maintenance agreements, professional services, utilities, employee-related costs, and other transactions requiring allocation across accounting periods. Emphasis is placed on assessing management assumptions, calculation methodologies, supporting evidence, reversals, and the risk of management bias.
Technology and data analytics are integrated into the audit of prepayments and accruals. Participants explore automated aging, amortization schedules, recurring journal analysis, supplier and invoice matching, subsequent-payment analytics, duplicate detection, trend analysis, and exception reporting. The course also considers ERP configurations, automated accruals, system-generated reversals, digital invoices, data interfaces, AI-supported accounting processes, and the importance of validating automated calculations and source data.
Through practical exercises and case studies, participants develop the ability to audit prepayments and accruals from transaction initiation through period-end reporting and subsequent settlement. The training emphasizes substantive testing, reconciliations, cut-off procedures, estimation review, professional skepticism, audit evidence, adjustment evaluation, and clear reporting so that financial statements accurately reflect expenses, liabilities, and assets in the appropriate reporting periods.
