Course Introduction

Post-harvest losses remain one of the greatest challenges facing agricultural value chains worldwide, particularly in developing countries where inadequate handling, storage, transportation, processing, and marketing systems result in significant losses of food and income. These losses not only reduce the profitability of farming enterprises but also contribute to food insecurity, resource wastage, and environmental degradation. This Post-Harvest Management and Loss Reduction Training Course equips participants with practical knowledge and skills to improve post-harvest systems, preserve product quality, and maximize the value of agricultural production from farm to market.

Effective post-harvest management begins immediately after harvest and involves a series of carefully coordinated activities designed to maintain product quality, safety, and marketability. The course introduces participants to the principles of post-harvest physiology, quality preservation, handling techniques, storage management, packaging solutions, and value addition opportunities. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how poor post-harvest practices affect product quality, market access, and profitability across agricultural value chains.

A major focus of the course is identifying the causes and sources of post-harvest losses across different commodities, including cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, roots, tubers, and livestock products. Participants will learn how environmental conditions, harvesting methods, transportation systems, pest infestations, microbial contamination, and inadequate storage facilities contribute to quantitative and qualitative losses. Practical solutions are presented to help stakeholders minimize these losses and improve overall supply chain performance.

The training also explores modern post-harvest technologies and infrastructure that enhance product preservation and reduce waste. Participants will examine storage technologies, cold chain systems, drying technologies, packaging innovations, warehouse management practices, and processing techniques that extend shelf life and improve market competitiveness. The course highlights the importance of integrating technology and best practices to strengthen food systems and improve economic returns for producers and agribusinesses.

Emerging trends and innovations in post-harvest management are incorporated throughout the course. Participants will explore digital traceability systems, smart packaging technologies, climate-resilient storage solutions, food safety management systems, circular economy approaches, and sustainable value chain development strategies. These innovations help improve efficiency, reduce losses, enhance food quality, and strengthen resilience within agricultural supply chains.

By the end of the course, participants will possess the technical and managerial competencies required to design and implement effective post-harvest management systems. They will be equipped to reduce losses, improve product quality, increase market opportunities, enhance food security, and support sustainable agricultural development through efficient post-harvest handling and value chain management practices.
