Course Introduction

Port and harbour civil works are essential components of global maritime infrastructure, supporting international trade, transportation networks, coastal development, offshore activities, and economic growth. The successful planning, design, construction, and maintenance of ports and harbours require specialized knowledge of marine environments, coastal processes, hydraulic structures, foundations, materials, and construction techniques. Structures such as quays, breakwaters, jetties, berths, terminals, seawalls, dredging systems, and marine foundations must withstand complex loading conditions, wave action, currents, tides, corrosion, and environmental challenges. This comprehensive training course equips participants with the practical knowledge and technical skills required to understand, manage, supervise, and maintain port and harbour civil works according to industry standards and sustainable engineering practices.

The course provides participants with a detailed understanding of marine infrastructure components, port planning principles, coastal engineering fundamentals, marine construction methods, dredging operations, foundation systems, concrete and steel marine structures, corrosion protection, inspection procedures, and maintenance strategies. Participants will learn how to evaluate marine site conditions, understand harbour development requirements, supervise construction activities, assess structural performance, and implement effective maintenance approaches. Practical exercises, engineering examples, and real-world port development case studies enhance participants’ ability to manage complex marine construction challenges.

As maritime infrastructure adopts advanced digital technologies, port and harbour engineering increasingly incorporates Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), drones, remote sensing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, digital twins, and smart asset management platforms. This course explores these emerging technologies and demonstrates how digital solutions improve marine surveying, construction monitoring, structural inspection, predictive maintenance, environmental assessment, and lifecycle management of port assets.

Participants will develop practical competencies in marine site assessment, port infrastructure planning, dredging principles, marine foundation systems, quay and berth construction, coastal protection structures, corrosion control, inspection methods, quality assurance, safety management, documentation, and engineering reporting. The course emphasizes internationally recognized marine engineering standards, construction specifications, environmental protection requirements, occupational health and safety procedures, and sustainable practices that support safe and resilient maritime infrastructure.

The training further examines contractual, environmental, sustainability, and occupational health and safety considerations associated with port and harbour civil works. Participants will understand marine construction regulations, environmental impact management, coastal ecosystem protection, marine safety procedures, contractor coordination, project risk management, and quality control requirements while learning practical approaches to reducing construction risks, improving asset durability, minimizing environmental impacts, and enhancing port operational reliability.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the expertise to support port and harbour development projects, evaluate marine civil works, supervise construction activities, implement maintenance strategies, and contribute effectively to maritime infrastructure management. These competencies enable organizations to improve marine asset performance, reduce operational risks, strengthen compliance, enhance sustainability, and successfully deliver safe, durable, and efficient port and harbour facilities.
