Course Introduction

Population data provide the foundation for understanding how societies change over time, how populations are distributed across geographic areas, and how demographic processes influence economic, social, health, and development outcomes. This course provides participants with a comprehensive framework for analyzing population data and conducting demographic research using census, survey, administrative, registration, and other population-based data sources.

The course examines core demographic concepts and analytical methods covering population size, composition, distribution, growth, fertility, mortality, migration, household structures, age and sex composition, dependency, urbanization, and population projections. Participants learn how to organize demographic information, construct population indicators, interpret demographic patterns, and connect observed population changes with broader social, economic, environmental, and institutional conditions.

A major emphasis is placed on practical population-data analysis. Participants explore census and survey datasets, population registers, vital statistics, migration records, administrative databases, and geographically referenced population information. The course addresses data preparation, quality assessment, demographic rates and ratios, standardization, cohort analysis, life tables, population pyramids, age-specific indicators, decomposition methods, and other analytical techniques used to understand population dynamics.

Participants also develop skills for analyzing demographic processes and their relationships with population structure. Topics include fertility measurement, mortality analysis, migration and mobility, marriage and household formation, ageing, youth populations, urbanization, population distribution, and demographic transition. Attention is given to differences between crude and standardized measures, period and cohort perspectives, numerator-denominator consistency, exposure measurement, and interpretation of demographic indicators across populations.

The programme emphasizes data quality, methodological transparency, and responsible interpretation. Participants examine coverage problems, age misreporting, digit preference, missing demographic information, inconsistent definitions, registration completeness, census undercount, survey sampling limitations, geographic boundary changes, and differences between population data sources. They also learn how to document analytical decisions, assess uncertainty, compare estimates, and communicate findings without overstating what demographic data can establish.

Emerging developments are integrated throughout the programme, including geospatial population analysis, high-resolution demographic data, population registers, administrative-data integration, migration and mobility datasets, remote sensing, demographic forecasting, small area population estimation, and computational demographic methods. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to conduct rigorous population-data analyses and develop evidence-based demographic research that supports planning, policy analysis, programme evaluation, and population-focused decision-making.
