Course Introduction

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century, affecting terrestrial, marine, and urban ecosystems worldwide. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of plastic waste generation, management systems, and innovative recycling strategies aimed at reducing environmental degradation.

The global increase in plastic consumption has outpaced waste management capacity, leading to severe environmental consequences such as clogged drainage systems, marine litter, soil contamination, and microplastic pollution that enters food chains and threatens human health.

This course explores the full lifecycle of plastics, from production and consumption patterns to waste segregation, collection systems, recycling technologies, and circular economy approaches designed to minimize plastic waste generation and maximize resource recovery.

Participants will examine modern recycling technologies including mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, and advanced waste-to-energy systems. The course emphasizes practical solutions for improving recycling efficiency and reducing dependence on single-use plastics.

Policy frameworks, international agreements, and corporate responsibility mechanisms are also analyzed to help participants understand how governance structures can drive large-scale plastic waste reduction and sustainable materials management.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the technical, managerial, and policy-oriented skills needed to design and implement effective plastic waste reduction and recycling programs in both urban and rural settings.

Duration
