Course Introduction
The Payroll Systems Auditing Training Course provides a practical framework for auditing computerized payroll systems, payroll applications, employee master data, automated calculations, payment processes, interfaces, and financial reporting controls. The course helps participants assess whether payroll systems process employee information and compensation accurately, completely, securely, and in accordance with approved policies and organizational requirements.
The course examines the payroll systems lifecycle from employee onboarding and master-data creation through salary processing, allowances, deductions, benefits, statutory obligations, payment, accounting, reconciliation, and employee separation. Participants learn how payroll information moves between human resources, time and attendance systems, payroll applications, banking platforms, enterprise resource planning systems, and the general ledger.
A major component of the training focuses on application and automated controls. Participants learn to audit payroll configurations, salary structures, pay scales, allowances, overtime rules, deductions, tax parameters, benefit calculations, approval workflows, payroll calendars, and system-generated calculations. The course emphasizes testing whether automated controls operate as intended and whether changes to critical payroll configurations are appropriately authorized, documented, tested, and monitored.
The program also addresses payroll master-data integrity and access management. Participants evaluate controls over employee creation, amendments, bank-account changes, salary changes, employment status, organizational assignments, termination dates, and other sensitive information. Particular attention is given to privileged access, segregation of duties, incompatible roles, administrator activity, user provisioning and removal, audit logs, and controls designed to prevent unauthorized changes to payroll data.
Payroll fraud and financial misstatement risks are integrated throughout the course. Participants examine ghost employees, duplicate employees, fictitious bank accounts, unauthorized salary increases, false overtime, manipulated allowances, inappropriate deductions, terminated employees remaining on payroll, and payroll payment diversion. The course also covers data analytics, duplicate testing, exception reporting, trend analysis, continuous monitoring, cybersecurity, cloud payroll systems, automation, and emerging artificial intelligence risks.
Through practical exercises and case studies, participants develop the ability to conduct end-to-end payroll systems audits using walkthroughs, controls testing, configuration review, access analysis, substantive testing, reconciliations, data analytics, system-log analysis, and independent evidence. Participants learn to identify control deficiencies, quantify payroll errors and potential losses, investigate anomalies, assess root causes, document audit evidence, and formulate practical recommendations for stronger payroll system governance and financial control.
