Course Introduction

Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is a powerful approach used in social development to engage communities in analyzing their own conditions and planning solutions. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of PRA principles, tools, and techniques for inclusive development planning.

The program explores how rural communities can actively participate in identifying problems, mapping resources, and prioritizing development needs. Participants will learn how to facilitate community-driven processes that ensure ownership and sustainability of interventions.

A strong emphasis is placed on practical field-based tools such as social mapping, transect walks, seasonal calendars, wealth ranking, and focus group discussions. These tools help uncover local knowledge and community perspectives that are often overlooked in traditional planning.

The course also highlights the importance of facilitation skills, ethical engagement, and power sensitivity when working with rural and marginalized communities. Participants will develop the ability to guide participatory processes effectively and respectfully.

Participants will explore how PRA is applied in sectors such as agriculture, health, water and sanitation, education, and livelihood development. This ensures cross-sectoral relevance and practical application in diverse development contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement participatory rural appraisal processes that empower communities, improve planning accuracy, and strengthen sustainable development outcomes.
