Course Introduction
The Overtime and Additional Payment Auditing Training Course provides a practical framework for auditing overtime, additional working hours, special-duty payments, shift payments, bonuses, incentives, allowances, and other compensation paid outside normal basic salary arrangements. The course helps participants determine whether additional employee payments are properly authorized, supported by reliable records, accurately calculated, paid only to eligible employees, and correctly recorded in payroll and financial accounts.
The course examines the complete overtime and additional-payment lifecycle from work scheduling and employee eligibility through time recording, supervisory approval, payroll calculation, payment, accounting, and reconciliation. Participants learn how to trace additional payments to employment contracts, approved policies, attendance records, timesheets, duty rosters, shift schedules, authorization forms, payroll registers, and payment records.
A major component of the training focuses on independently testing overtime and additional-payment calculations. Participants learn to verify applicable rates, eligible hours, normal working hours, overtime thresholds, rest-day and holiday work, shift differentials, special-duty rates, bonuses, incentives, and other payment formulas. The course also addresses effective dates, rate changes, rounding, maximum limits, retroactive adjustments, and payroll-system configuration risks that can result in inaccurate payments.
The program emphasizes reconciliation between operational evidence and payroll records. Participants evaluate whether overtime hours claimed correspond with attendance systems, access records, duty rosters, approved schedules, production records, service activity, or other independent evidence. Particular attention is given to payments that appear unusual when compared with employee grades, working patterns, departments, locations, periods, or peer groups.
Fraud and control risks are integrated throughout the course. Participants examine risks involving false overtime, inflated hours, duplicate claims, unauthorized rates, fictitious work, supervisor collusion, manipulated attendance records, excessive overtime, inappropriate allowances, and payments after employee separation. The course also addresses automated timekeeping, biometric systems, payroll interfaces, access controls, cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and continuous monitoring of additional-pay transactions.
Through practical exercises and case studies, participants develop the ability to conduct comprehensive audits of overtime and additional payments using document inspection, independent recalculation, controls testing, substantive procedures, data analytics, time-record reconciliation, exception analysis, and transaction tracing. Participants learn to quantify overpayments, identify root causes, evaluate control effectiveness, document defensible audit evidence, and develop recommendations that improve payroll accuracy, workforce controls, cost management, and financial reporting.
