Course Introduction

Outliers can substantially influence statistical estimates, distort relationships between variables, and lead to misleading conclusions when they are not properly identified and investigated. The Outlier Detection and Robust Statistical Analysis Training Course provides participants with a practical and rigorous understanding of how unusual observations arise, how they can be detected, and how their influence can be assessed without automatically removing legitimate but extreme cases from a dataset.

The course introduces participants to statistical, graphical, computational, and model-based approaches for identifying outliers in univariate, bivariate, and multivariate datasets. Participants examine methods such as standardized scores, interquartile ranges, boxplots, robust distance measures, leverage diagnostics, influence statistics, and density-based approaches. Emphasis is placed on understanding the difference between data errors, unusual observations, influential observations, and genuine population variability.

A major focus of the training is robust statistical analysis, which provides methods that remain reliable when datasets contain outliers, heavy-tailed distributions, skewness, or violations of classical statistical assumptions. Participants explore robust measures of location and scale, trimmed and winsorized statistics, robust correlation, robust regression, resistant estimation, and alternative hypothesis-testing approaches. Practical exercises demonstrate how robust techniques can complement rather than simply replace conventional statistical procedures.

The course also addresses multivariate outlier detection, where unusual observations may not appear extreme on any single variable but can become highly unusual when relationships among several variables are considered simultaneously. Participants learn about Mahalanobis distance, robust covariance estimation, principal component methods, clustering-based approaches, isolation techniques, and other computational strategies for detecting complex patterns of unusual observations in high-dimensional datasets.

Participants will also learn how to evaluate the consequences of outliers on statistical models and research conclusions. Through practical case studies, they examine how extreme observations can affect means, variances, correlations, regression coefficients, confidence intervals, significance tests, classification models, and predictive performance. The course emphasizes transparent decision-making, encouraging analysts to document why observations are retained, transformed, investigated separately, or excluded rather than treating outlier removal as an automatic preprocessing step.

Emerging approaches are incorporated throughout the programme, including machine-learning-based anomaly detection, automated outlier screening, robust artificial intelligence workflows, explainable anomaly detection, high-dimensional diagnostics, and reproducible analytical pipelines. Participants learn how these modern techniques can support traditional statistical reasoning while recognizing their limitations. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to design defensible outlier detection strategies and apply robust statistical methods across research, business, operational, financial, scientific, and analytical environments.
