Course Introduction

Operational Research and Decision Analytics Training Course provides a comprehensive and practical framework for applying quantitative methods, analytical models, optimization techniques, and evidence-based reasoning to complex organizational decisions. The course equips participants with the ability to transform operational data into actionable intelligence, evaluate competing alternatives, optimize limited resources, and develop robust solutions to planning, scheduling, logistics, production, service delivery, and strategic decision-making challenges. Emphasis is placed on connecting mathematical and analytical techniques with real-world management and operational environments.

The programme introduces participants to the core principles of operational research and demonstrates how analytical thinking can improve the quality, speed, transparency, and consistency of organizational decisions. Participants explore problem formulation, data collection, model development, assumptions, objective functions, constraints, sensitivity analysis, and interpretation of analytical results. Through practical examples and applied exercises, learners develop the ability to distinguish between different classes of operational problems and select appropriate quantitative methods for addressing them effectively.

A major component of the training focuses on optimization and mathematical programming, including linear programming, integer programming, nonlinear programming, network optimization, transportation models, assignment problems, and resource allocation. Participants learn how optimization models can be constructed to maximize benefits or minimize costs while accounting for operational constraints. The course also examines how optimization results should be interpreted, validated, communicated, and translated into practical recommendations rather than treated as purely mathematical outputs.

The course further develops decision analytics capabilities through simulation, forecasting, probability analysis, decision trees, risk analysis, queuing models, inventory analytics, and scenario evaluation. Participants learn how analytical approaches can support decisions when information is incomplete, demand is uncertain, resources are constrained, or operational conditions change over time. The programme emphasizes the importance of testing assumptions, examining alternative scenarios, assessing uncertainty, and communicating the implications of analytical findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Modern operational research increasingly incorporates advanced analytics, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, real-time data, and decision-support technologies. This course therefore explores emerging developments such as predictive and prescriptive analytics, optimization-assisted machine learning, digital twins, intelligent scheduling, real-time decision systems, and AI-supported operational planning. Participants examine both the opportunities and challenges associated with these technologies, including data quality, model transparency, explainability, computational complexity, bias, governance, and responsible use of automated recommendations.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to approach operational and managerial problems systematically, formulate decision problems mathematically, select appropriate analytical techniques, develop and evaluate quantitative models, and communicate evidence-based recommendations. The training is designed to strengthen analytical confidence while maintaining a strong connection between technical methods and practical organizational outcomes. Participants will also gain a structured foundation for using operational research and decision analytics to improve efficiency, resource utilization, service quality, resilience, risk management, and strategic planning.
